Ipratropium bromide is the non-proprietary name for a bronchodilator used to reduce the frequency and severity of bronchospasm in a range of conditions. It most commonly administered by inhaler, though it is also used in nebulizers.

This medication is better known by the brand name Atrovent, and patients can also buy ipratropium bromide in combination inhalers, such as Combivent, when it provides insufficient relief on its own.

Ipratropium bromide is often used in:

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Asthma
• Bronchitis
• Emphysema

The majority of patients buy ipratropium bromide as a long-term treatment. In this application the medication is taken daily, regardless of symptoms, to reduce the frequency of bronchospasm exacerbations and to reduce their severity when episodes do occur. Treatment usually consists of:

• Administer 2 inhalations 4 times per day, at evenly-spaced intervals.
• Continue daily treatment even if no symptoms are present.

It will take several weeks of treatment, in most cases, for significant results to be seen.

Less commonly patients buy ipratropium bromide for use as a rescue inhaler, and some find it works quite well for this purpose. However, it is slower-acting than more commonly-used rescue inhalers, such as albuterol; it is not the ideal rescue inhaler for everyone. If it is used, it is much like any other rescue inhaler:

• Administer 1 or 2 inhalations as needed.
• Do not exceed 12 inhalations in a 24 hour period.

As a bronchodilator, the medication's primary effect is in relaxing and widening airways in the lungs. It also somewhat inhibits production of mucus. Both actions improve impaired breathing.

Adverse Effects & Interactions

Common side effects associated with ipratropium bromide are typically mild and not cause for concern unless severe enough to be disruptive:

• Headache
• Mild dizziness
• Mild nausea
• Tremor
• Dry mouth, dry cough
• Mild throat irritation
• Mild flu-like symptoms

Ipratropium bromide can interact with other medications. Of particular concern are:

• Urinary or bladder medications
• Antihistamines, found in cold or allergy medications
• Other bronchodilators
• Parkinson's disease medications
• Medications intended to treat irritable bowel syndrome, vertigo, gastric ulcer, or heartburn
